The Cosmic Serpent

The Cosmic Serpent

'Cosmic Serpent'
ink and gold paint
Japan, 2007

from the exhibition 'Visions of MU'

This piece was inspired by the book 'The Cosmic Serpent' by Jeremy Narby, inwhich he explores the universal myth of the serpent throughout cultures all over the world as a being which guards knowledge. While in Japan this concept resonated particularly strong as I would visit Buddhist temples with enormous and beautiful murals of serpent like dragons painted above meditation halls as a kind of gatekeeper to the deeper realms of insight. It was as if the danger and fear created by the image of the dragon were merely a test of one's courage to surpass these obstacles to gain greater insight.

The World Tree exhibition of paintings by Tim Parish @ Open Studios

The World Tree exhibition of paintings by Tim Parish @ Open Studios

"The World Tree" is an exhibition of new paintings by artist Tim Parish,

The work in the exhibition has evolved from an interest in mythic symbolism used by visionary culture across time and is informed by the artists recent explorations of the connections between Alchemical texts, Shamanism and Animist philosophy which percieves a living spiritual universe which permeates the material plane.

These paintings are influenced visually part by the Japanese ink paintings as well as western mystical traditions, I am experimenting with new ways to represent archaic insights into the natural world as the source of life and mystery.

All wisdom is fruits of the world tree, and these paintings are small reflections of those truths...

such as the Tree of Life, The World Tree created over the last six months since returning from travels abroad. The work explores themes of alchemy, deep ecology and visionary states.

Empty Show 2002

video : Tim Parish

audio: DJ Shadow

A short music video documentation of the first Empty Show in Williamstown, Melbourne 2002.

"I created this while video working for the Melbourne community tv show Access News as a creative way to document the first Empty Show exhibition, which a number of well known street artists around Melbourne had created in an abandoned pub in Williamstown. It only lasted for an hour hour before the police came and kicked us all out, and although I returned there a few months later the whole place had been boarded up. For all I know all the art is still sitting in there, like some cave that will be discovered by future anthropologists or something and turned into a monument of early 21st century creativity. Or, at least I hope so."
